“It’s of some interest that the lively arts of the millennial U.S.A. treat anhedonia and internal emptiness as hip and cool. It’s maybe the vestiges of the Romantic glorification of Weltschmerz, which means world-weariness or hip ennui. Maybe it’s the fact that most of the arts here are produced by world-weary and sophisticated older people and then consumed by younger people who not only consume art but study it for clues on how to be cool, hip—and keep in mind that, for kids and younger people, to be hip and cool is the same as to be admired and accepted and included and so Unalone. Forget so-called peer-pressure. It’s more like peer-hunger. No? We enter a spiritual puberty where we snap to the fact that the great transcendent horror is loneliness, excluded encagement in the self. Once we’ve hit this age, we will now give or take anything, wear any mask, to fit, to be part-of, not be Alone, we young. The U.S. arts are our guide to inclusion. A how-to. We are shown how to fashion masks of ennui and jaded irony at a young age where the face is fictile enough to assume the shape of whatever it wears. And then it’s stuck there, the weary cynicism that saves us from gooey sentiment and unsophisticated naïveté. Sentiment equals naïveté on this continent.” —David Foster Wallace, Infinite Jest (via gugs-mac)

Dumb Friends Watch Movies: movie club learns japanese → dumbfriendswatchmovies.tumblr.com

Two movies with subtitles? Damnnnn we fancy, as Brendan (whose absence was felt strongly by all this evening) would say.

“I’m confused”- Ash, less than three seconds in.

“Why is he wearing a bale of hay?”- L

“Is that French?”-Ash’s dad

“That elk has seen so much.”- R

“Butt watch: 8”- S

“Hey a bear- WHOA.” -Everyone

“This place is magical. Or in Japanese, ‘OOOOAHHH’”- R

“I really want some bacon.”-S after seeing piles of slaughtered monster boars.

Tomorrow, Movie Club braces itself for a daytime viewing of Silence of the Lambs (which we knows is not a horror-horror movie but all the same).

what do friends mean to you?

I’m not sure if you meant what friendship means to me or what my friends mean to me.. I’ll happily answer both though :)

I think a good friendship is really underestimated. Now, I’m all for alone time, but it’s often really easy to feel disconnected from people (thanks to the Internet). I think a good friend just gives you that positive reassurance that in this crazy screwy world there’s another person that sees it the way you do. And as cheesy as it is, a good friend is always there — in which, my friends are much better at than I am. It’s a lot about sacrifice. Whether it be a friend who stays up helping me with my project even though she has a final exam the next day or a friend who talks with me the whole night until I feel better… I don’t know, I honestly don’t know what I’d do without them.

As for what my friends mean to me, they mean a whole lot. They help me laugh when I come bawling to them with a horrible haircut (drama queen tendencies) or they cut a picture of my face so I can be in the senior class picture when I can’t come to school. And best of all, they’re not too nice. Is that weird? Probably.

They don’t let me get away with my crap. They call me out when I’m being an annoying bitch or when I need to get my act together. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but refreshing that someone has the guts to give you that wake-up call.

Tom Hiddleston reading Shakespeare Sonnet 130

My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips’ red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damask’d, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:
   And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
   As any she belied with false compare.

what did habib talk about? i heard he was seen buying a slurpee at 7/11

Habib’s speech was more along the lines of “you guys are probably going to drink, do drugs, and more stupid shit… but don’t wreck yourself.”

LOL, that’s nice :) I can see him doing that

Did you have Mr. Lyons? What was his final speeh about I heard it was really special.

No I didn’t. I had Habib. And YES. I heard he gives amazing final speeches (tear-inducing worthy). Unfortunately, he didn’t give it this year :( I’ll redirect you to Lisa for more ranting on this matter.

How tall are you and how tall is Brandon Calamari.

LOLOLL that is such a good name! I might have to start using it.

I’m 5’ 1 (and a quarter) and Brandon Calamari is 6’1

Sharon. Thank you sooooo much for capturing some of the best moments of the year. You are always great with both pictures and video and I am so glad you share the memories you capture. Gotta be honest, that video made me cry a little bit. Also, is it possible for me to get a copy of the full, high-quality video?

awww I hope you don’t mind me making this public, this just made me really happy. You guys made the video really, I just captured it :) And yeah, for everyone who wants the video, just give me a USB or SD card that I can copy it onto. (I’m sure if you give it to Lisa/Brendan at Dunbar’s GRT Party, I can get it back to you no problem)

I’m also planning to upload Dunbar’s full speech sometime, so watch out for that :)
